I'm reading tim bradford's groundwater diaries, theese days.
it could be a nice idea doing the same thing with the lost rivers of milano. but there's not time for that. for me a short visit to the point where the olona river falls deep inside the ground in pero is enough. and, on the way home, a fast sketch of the site where the waters from the pero depurator join the water of the olona, running in the drainage canal in boscoincittà.

yesterday I took my 20-years-old hockey skates (graf 101), cleaned them from dust and went to have some fun in the temporary ice rink in the belly of the new regione lombardia building (where once was the bosco di gioia). it was o.k., but the rink was too small and overcrowded. next time i'll go skating somewhere else.

I bought a new helmet, so I took my bicycle and went wandering on the countryside north of milano. I lost myself a couple of times, then I found the canale villoresi path. I rode along it from garbagnate to monza, then went back on the same road. a short stop at castellazzo di bollate for a sketch and then back in trenno, trying to equalize the loss of liquids via sweat with other liquids via glass.

o.k. let's see togheter what happened on the streets of dublin on june, 16 1904/on the streets of milano on july, 23 2011 (and somewhere in the mediterraneo see some centuries ago).
let's see each chapter, with the help of linati scheme. with a good part of self irony, by the way, or everything will fall apart...

chapters 1, 2 and 3 (telemachia) will not be considered, because they are all dedalus' stuff, not bloom's, as well of chapter 18 (nostos chapter 3), wich is molly's.
so chapter 4 (or ch.1 of the proper odissea) will be the first.

ch.4 - calypso / breakfast h.8,00. easy choice. bloom prepares breakfast with lot of stuff wich I'd never eat. I just drink some tea, eat some biscuits, muesli and something more. that's enough for me.
color: orange, science: mytology, meaning: departing wayfarer, organ: kidneys. but also: vagina...

ch.5 - lotus eaters / the bath h.9,00. bloom goes out to buy soaps and lotions, pass in front of a church and see people taking communion. then had a bath. I just had a warm bath in my bathroom.
color: dark brown, science: chemistry, meaning: temptation of faith, organ: skin. but also: penis in the bath, froth, flowers...

ch.6 - hades / the funeral h.11,00. bloom goes to the funeral of a friend. meets some people, there, talking a lot. a short visit to cimitero maggiore, quoted in the book because in milano it was possible to go the cemetery by tramway (in dublin not).
color: black+white, science: void, meaning: descent into nothingness, organ: heart.

ch.7 - aeolus / the newspaper h.12,00. an hour of the work of bloom, on the office of a newspaper. I just went to via solferino, headquarters of rcs (corriere + gazzetta a.k.a. la marrone), found a newspaperkiosk there.
color: red, science: rhetoric, meaning: derision of victory, organ: lungs.

ch.8 lestrygonians / lunch h.13,00. fast lunch on davy byrne's pub, after having passed along a place where people didn't inspire him at all. he reflects about vegetarianism. I eat some chips on a fast food, amongst people wich don't inspire me at all.
color: red blood, science: architecture, meaning: despondency, organ: oesophagus.

ch.9 scylla and carybdis / library h.14,00. blooms talks about lot of things with other people in the national library. I just spent a quarter of hour in silence in the main room of sormani library.
color: void, science: literature, meaning: duble edge swords, organ: brain. but also: whirpools.

ch.10 wandering rocks / the streets h.15,00. people roaming along the streets of dublin. people roaming under the streets of milano (sitting ten minutes on the platform of duomo underground station).
color: rainbow, science: mechanics, meaning: hostile milieu, organ: blood.

ch.11 sirens / the tavern h. 16,00. bloom and other people spent an hour in a place with two women as bartenders and a piano wich is played along the singing of someone. actualy I couldn't find a place with live music, at this time of the afternoon. so I sketched a famous bridge with four statues of sirens, once placed along the naviglio canal, now grounded. they are in the parco sempione nowadays.
color: coral, science: music, meaning: the sweet deceit, organ: ear. but also: fuga per canonem.

ch.12 cyclops / the pub h.17,00. bloom had a dicussion in a pub (barney kiernan's). I tried to have a discussion with someone, but at this time of the afternoon I have been lucky enough to find an open pub (the magenta). wich was more or less empty. I drank a lonely pint.
color: green, science: surgery, meaning: egocidal terror, organ: muscles, bones.

ch.13 nausicaa / the rocks h.20,00. bloom stood alone, gazing at a girl (metaphor of ireland, I don't know why) watching the fireworks on the sandymount strand. the only strand I could find in milano was the darsena. I waited there for fireworks and girls to gaze at, in vain.
color: grey, science: painting, meaning: the projected mirage, organ: eye, nose.

ch.14 oxen of the sun / the hospital h.22,00. a misterious chapter. bloom goes to the hospital because a friend of him is giving birth to her nineth son. he found there people to talk and drink with (eh? in a hospital). then, drunken and noisy, they went out in search of a pub. I just went to vittore buzzi hospital, where lots of babies daily born, and had a bier in the hospital bar. not exactly the place to have a strong booze in. color: white, science: physics, meaning: eternal herds, organ: uterus.

ch.15 circe / the brothel h.23,00. bloom followed his new friend dedalus in a brothel. the plot is pure delirius. the milano brothel could be the stock market. hey, that's a metaphor.
color: purple, science: dance, meaning: the man-hating ogress, organ: locomotor apparatus, skeleton.

nostos (back to ithaca)

ch.1 eumaeus / the hut h.00,00. on the way home bloom and dedalus stopped in a open-all-night bar in wich they found people to talk with. on my way home the you-must-stop-here-place is cooperativa la concordia, trenno.
color: void, science: void, meaning: ambush on home ground, organ: nerves.

ch.2 hitaca. finally at home h.01,00. bloom discovered that he forgot the keys. he had to jump into a window. he talked a while with dedalus, then parted. and back in the bed with molly (who has betrayed him in the afternoon). the keys of my home. don't try to make a copy of them out of my sketches. they are just sketches.
color: milky, like star, science: void, meaning: armed hope, organ: juices.

leopold bloom & me

on july, 23 I took a copy of james joyce's ulysses in one hand, the codice linati in the other and then I rode the streets of milan on the footsteps of leopold bloom, trying to cope with the chapters of joyce's book and sketching my own version of the famous one-day-long-travel. transposed from dublin to milan.
the results are 26 sketches, illustrating the 14 chapters in wich leopold bloom/ulysses is the main character (in the first three is dedalus/telemaco, the last one is molly/penelope). at the end of the day I put together the sketches in a 10,50 meter long stream of consciousness.
now I will take a little rest, then I will post all the chapters, with my own explanation of the meaning of the whole stuff (if there is one).

yesterday I took my bicycle and went to rho, the hinterland town well known because of the new milano fair (and the new expo area).
and not for much else, I have to say.
a short visit to downtown and then on the bike again in the suburbs, where rotten old factories are easy to find, and in the nearby countryside, in search of a new bike path wich I found out doesn't exist at all. I found another short one, anyway, along the banks of the scolmatore canal. not very usefull for me. on the way back I had to ride along the sempione road.

just read that they will soon demolish the palasharp, formerly known as palatrussardi, palavobis, palatucker, mazdapalace.
the tensile building is (was) the emblem of this city: built in a temporary term due to the distruction of the city palasport, it half-illegally survived for 25 years. one drop of the indecency of the craxi-style way of ruling tipical of the milanese political class.
it was the venue of a uncountable sport and music events, even with its conclamate bad acoustic. I won't add my contribute to the nostagic laments wich flow in the local media. they will build something new, anyway.
these two sketches carved out from the wall of fog of these days are all I have to say about.

I never imagined to find myself playing in a liscio dance contest (a proper one, with the numbers on the back of the dancers...). in fact, it happened, I still don't know why. it just happened.
in a short pause I took a glance to the dancers, whose average age seemed to be about 95 (probably it wasn't so high, maybe a couple of years less...)

experimenting new technics, this time I took inspiration from the butterbrotpapier tipical of rolf schroeter (hi, rolf).
ok, this is not proper butterbrotpapier, but it seems quite similar in the spirit, I guess...
here in milano I couldn't find a true berliner kneipe, so I had to use other models. here you have the c.a.m. in via lampugnano, tipical place where old people play cards all day long, and the cooperativa la concordia, a.k.a. il paradiso dello spruzzo, where people from trenno use to get their usual booze.

note: until the area was inglobated in the city of milano, people from trenno was nicknamed in dialect "ranàt", wich is something to do with the frogs overcrowing the rice fields in the nearby.

togliattigrad in val d'ayas

some sketches of champoluc, val d'ayas. I've been told that one of this houses (I don't tell wich one) has hosted the former pci leader togliatti.

drawing glaciers in the most sultry days of the year

when you can't breath anymore for the sultry, when it's not possible to sleep in the night because of the hot wheater, when everything outside the window seems boiling...go climb a mountain, as near as possible to a glacier.
i did it.
here are the sketches I made from the top of testa grigia (groab hont in walser language) 3.315 mt., in front of the glaciers of monte rosa.
I reached the top quite early in the morning, there was a huge inversione termica (What's the english for it?) and the whole pianura padana seemed an ocean of whipped cream.
I tried to give the idea with a 360 degree visual made of 13 different pages of my sketchbook, from cervino to cervino, later melted togheter at the computer.
I post the 360 degree visual in two different jpg, one in its whole delirium and one in three stripes, easier to read.
and a two-pages image of monte rosa.

a short visit to quarto cagnino, on the west edge of the city. here there are lots of very big buildings (with streets passing under them)as well as old houses, reminescences of rural past.
